Plans to register private landlords

The UK government according to The Times is going to pass a law forcing all private landlords to register themselves in a property landlord register. The move is aimed at reducing exploitation of tenants and to create more regulation in an industry where a lot goes on behind the scenes.

Most consumers are probably aware that such a scheme is already under way in Scotland and the scheme has so far failed to work in Scotland since only 75% of present properties have been registered. This leaves the law abiding landlords at a disadvantage from rogue property owners who chose not to register their properties.

This will come as sweet surprise to ARLA (The Association of Rental and Letting Agents) who have lobbied the government for something similar to improve professional standards within the industry.

This was mostly after concerns were raised earlier this year about tenants not being given prior information that their landlord was going down under and possibly faced a repossession of his property. Many times the tenants were forcefully evicted with short notices after not being informed.

It is aimed that this will improve professionalism within the whole property letting sector and help move things in the right direction so please ensure you have registered with your local authority.

Most local councils are extremely strapped for cash and are wasting no time in withholding your rental and to impose fines of £5000 so the £55 cost for registration is not as costly as the fine.
